Home and Garden Show Announces First Soap Suds Sunday for The Salvation Army
This year for the first time, Sunday visitors to the Lansing Home and Garden Show will have a chance to save on admission while also helping the community, with the launch of Soap Suds Sunday for The Salvation Army.
Anyone who brings an unopened package of soap, shampoo, or laundry detergent on March 21st will receive a Buy One/Get One Free Adult Admission coupon for the show. All donations go to The Salvation Army Capital Area’s Family Services Department, where they will help fill an area of need that SACA Director of Social Services Molly Chambers says is often overlooked.
“People who donate goods often think of food, not knowing that Bridge Cards [formerly Food Stamps] can be used to receive free or discounted food, but not for personal needs items,” she explains. “For many people in need, our Pantry Closet program is the only way they can get shampoo, toothpaste, razors – things most of us take for granted.”
The Pantry Closet is open Tuesdays and Thursdays for personal needs giveaways, and Chambers reports it serves about 110 people a month. Demand for the items is high, and Chambers says many more could be served if the goods were available.
“We’re excited about partnering with the Home and Garden Show,” she says. “We think it’s a perfect match. We’re looking forward to the actual donations that people will bring, and we’re also hoping that this will help raise our community’s awareness of the need to continue donating these items.”
Carolyn Alt, Show Manager, is also looking forward to the first Soap Suds Sunday. “We’re really pleased to be doing something that will help such a great program,” she says. “I expect a strong response this year and an even stronger one next year, when we plan to do it again.”
“The businesses and people here in the Lansing area have made this a wonderful show over the last 14 years,” Alt continues. “We’re glad to be able to give something back to the community by partnering with such a great program.”
