Spring into the Lansing Home and Garden Show
Spring is in the air at the 2010 Lansing Home and Garden Show! With over 300 exhibitors, 12 feature gardens, four seminar stages, and much more, the MSU Pavilion is packed to the rafters with everything you need to create your dream home and tackle this year’s landscape projects.
One of the best things about the Show is that patrons can meet local people who provide all the products and services they need for their homes – inside and outside – in one place. A few hours saves days of driving! Roofing, replacement windows, kitchen remodeling, refinishing furniture, landscape design – if you can think of it, it’s here at the show, offered by area businesses that care about the community.
Start your Spring Cleaning early by bringing unneeded items that are difficult to dispose of to the show! The City of Lansing Waste Reduction will be leading an effort to recycle and properly dispose of:
- Old books, including phone books and magazines, will be donated to local churches and libraries or recycled
- Batteries, excluding car batteries
- Old cell phones
- Athletic Shoes for the NIKE Reuse-A-Shoe Program, where shoes are ground up to make athletic courts, balls, and other items. No cleats or spikes, please!
This year’s
Home Stage is hot! Renowned designer
Leslie Hart-Davidson will present
5 Under $500: Big Bang Bitty Budget Decorating, plus more, including a special Family Day seminar on Saturday. And, visitors will want to learn how to take advantage of federal tax credits for first-time buyers, and the secrets of low-cost mortgages. Plus more informative and entertaining seminars – all four days, and all free!
Sponsored this year by The Capital Area Landscape & Nurseryman’s Association (CALNA), the
Garden Stage welcomes a host of experts, including internationally recognized gardener Janet Macunovich leading seminars on creative landscape design. Joined by her husband, photographer Steven Nikkila, Janet’s seminars are as rewarding to watch as they are to hear.
The Cooking Stage brings audience-favorite Chef Robert Garlough back for
A Chip (and Dip!) Off the New Block – an exploration of homemade appetizers. Garlough will demonstrate such irresistible combinations as Roasted Tomato Salsa with Fresh Potato Chips, Roasted Red Pepper Hummus Dip with Sage Crackers, Spinach & Artichoke Spread with Whole Wheat Crackers, and Guacamole Picado y Tostaditas.
Outdoor projects are the focus on the
Stiles Landscape Supply & Stone Stage, where homeowners can learn expert techniques for installing landscape lighting and irrigation systems.
Saturday is Family Day! Children (under 15) get in free until noon, and there are loads of special activities and events for children, parents, and grandparents, including Birdman Joe Rogers providing close encounters with owls, hawks, and more during his popular
Birds of Prey Show.
Whether it’s Family Day or any other day, the
Cran-Hill Ranch Family Area provides a welcome break, giving kids a chance to have fun and parents an opportunity to meet undistracted with exhibitors.
Always popular, the Show’s gorgeous Indoor Gardens include 12 fully landscaped settings this year. Enthusiasts will be inspired, but even non-gardeners will appreciate the promise of Spring they add to the air. Offerings by respected local landscapers include thousands of blooming perennials and annuals, shrubs and trees, and water gardens. Even fabulous outdoor kitchens and fun ideas for entertaining al fresco!
Flower lovers will want to visit the
Standard Flower Show to see all the prize-winning entries. This year’s theme is "Floral Fantasy - Fairy Tales & Fables" and it is once again presented by the Federated Garden Clubs of Michigan, District II B.
